Kiwame Kubo
Kiwame Kubo
Born in Osaka in March 1956, Kiwame Kubo left Japan for Italy in 1974, seeking inspiration for his artistic future as a sculptor. Kiwame Kubo got a Diploma in Sculpture from the Florence Academy of Fine Art in 1978. He learned traditional marble sculpture during his 9-year apprenticeship at Atelier Cervitti, Pietrasanta, Lucca, Italy.
Kiwame Kubo returned to Japan in 1984. On his way back, he travelled overland via the southern route of the Silk Road - through North Africa, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Thailand, which were all places that inspired him and gave his craft more originality. This journey also made him aware of our modern world's preoccupation with sophisticated images. Since then, he has therefore returned to more fundamental forms of artistic expression.
Kiwame Kubo now makes sculptures from marble and granite, which are composed according to geometric principles and informed by traditional Italian craftsmanship. The pieces he produces look simple, but refined and intricate.
Kiwame currently lives in Okayama, working in Japan as a
freelancer.
